The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the supply chains among most industries, but some feel the impact more than others. Most recently it appears the availability of Sony’s PlayStation 5 will again be reduced. The console has been hard to find for most of the time since its launch last year and now Bloomberg reports the Japanese conglomerate has reduced its PS5 production for this fiscal year due to component and logistics constraints.

The publication, citing people familiar with the operations, claims that Sony previously had a production forecast of 16 million units for the year ending in March, but it’s now down to about 15 million, meaning it will probably just match its goal of selling 14.8 million PS5 units by March.

Sony’s problems stem from the uneven vaccine rollouts in developing countries where it has set up its production bases, resulting in an unpredictable supply of chips and other components. And this affects the game makers as well since the PS5 fans turn towards the PC versions of the console’s games due to its limited availability.

Sony’s manufacturing partners expect the PS5 to remain elusive through 2022 and said that meeting the sales target of 22.6 million sales in the next fiscal year by producing enough units will be a challenge.

Sony rolled out PS4 system update 10.0 today alongside the much-awaited PS5 firmware update. Unlike the current-gen console, PS4’s firmware update doesn’t offer a whole lot, but that’s to be expected at this point in the console’s lifecycle. Nevertheless, PS4 still has a massive install base and it’s nice to see improvements headed its way. Today’s system update improves Remote Play features and the Internet Browser.

• While using the Internet Browser, you can now select between two types of zoom functions. “Zoom” lets you increase the size of the elements on the page while adjusting their layout so everything fits without having to scroll left and right. “Magnify” increases the size of everything on the page without layout adjustments. The maximum zoom/magnification rate is now 500%.
  
• We’ve updated the following for Remote Play. It’s now easier to use the keyboard on your PC or Mac when using PS Remote Play. We’ve removed the text entry box so you can use your keyboard to type directly onto your PS5 console or PS4 console. In addition to typing, you can also now use the keyboard to control games that support it.

After announcing its handheld device device known as Project Q back in March, Sony formally introduced the remote play handheld dubbed PlayStation Portal.

The device leverages PS Remote Play allowing you to play your PS5 games anywhere as long as you have Wi-Fi connectivity. The PS Portal needs at least 5Mbps Internet speeds to function while Sony suggests 15Mbps speeds for optimal gaming experience. You can only play supported games that are installed on your PS5 console and Sony says the device will not support PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming. You won’t be able to run any other games or media locally either.

PS Portal brings an 8-inch LCD with 1080P resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate as well as the same controller layout as the PS5 DualSense. The handheld brings a USB-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and top-mounted speakers. The rest of the spec sheet is still under wraps for now.

Oddly, the PS Portal does not come with Bluetooth connectivity and only supports Wi-Fi and PlayStation Link. The latter is Sony’s new proprietary wireless connectivity standard which brings low latency lossless audio and switching between compatible devices. The tech is coming to Sony’s new Pulse Explore wireless earbuds ($200/€220/£200) and Pulse Elite headset ($150/€150/£120) both of which are launching later this year.

PlayStaion Portal is priced at $200/€220/£200 and is also set to debut later this year with Sony promising more details and official launch dates soon.
